What happens in a first therapy session

Therapy

Feeling nervous before the first session is normal. Here is what to expect, so you can arrive a little lighter.

Starting therapy can bring up a mix of relief and nervousness. Knowing what happens in the first session helps make that step a little easier.

A conversation to get to know each other

The first session is mostly about listening. You can share what brings you to therapy, in your own words and at your own pace. There are no right answers and you don't need to prepare anything.

I will also ask a few questions about your history and your daily life, and explain how I work, how sessions are organised and how confidentiality works.

Your questions matter too

It is a good moment to ask anything you want to know: how often we will meet, what therapy can and cannot offer, or how online sessions work. Feeling comfortable with your psychologist is an important part of the process.

And then?

At the end, we decide together whether and how to continue. Some people know right away; others prefer to think about it. Both are completely fine.
